Importing From China to Israel
Supplier verification, minimum quantities, payment terms, inspection and freight routes into Israeli ports.
China remains the default origin for most Israeli importers, and for good reason: manufacturing depth, component availability and price. It is also where the largest number of avoidable mistakes are made, because access is easy and verification is optional.
Factory or trading company?
Many suppliers presenting themselves as manufacturers are trading companies. This is not automatically a problem — a good trading company can source across several factories, handle small quantities and manage communication well.
It becomes a problem when you believe you are dealing with the factory: your price includes a margin you cannot see, your quality feedback passes through an intermediary, and your minimum quantity may be artificially set.
Establish which you are dealing with before negotiating, not after.
Minimum order quantities are negotiable — sometimes
MOQs are usually driven by material purchase, machine setup or colour batching. Where the constraint is real, no amount of negotiation moves it. Where it is a commercial preference, it often moves considerably.
Understanding which of the two you are facing is worth more than haggling.
Payment terms and exposure
A 30% deposit against 70% before shipment is the common structure. Your exposure is the deposit, plus the opportunity cost of the time.
Reduce that exposure by verifying the supplier before the deposit, tying the balance to a passed final inspection, and — on larger orders — using a letter of credit or documentary payment rather than a plain transfer.
Inspection is not optional at distance
A final random inspection typically costs a few hundred dollars. A container of unsaleable goods costs the entire order.
- Pre-production: confirms materials and components match the approved sample
- During production: catches systematic defects while the line is still running
- Final random inspection: checks finished goods, quantity, packaging and labelling
- Loading supervision: confirms what actually goes into the container
Shipping to Israel
Sea freight from the main Chinese ports to Haifa or Ashdod is the standard route for commercial volumes. Transit time varies with routing and season, and should be confirmed at booking rather than assumed.
Air freight is worth it for high-value, low-weight or genuinely urgent goods. Courier is for samples and very small consignments.
If your order does not fill a container, LCL consolidation is available — but below a certain volume, and above another, the economics reverse. That threshold is worth calculating for your specific shipment.
Regulatory requirements do not travel with the goods
A product sold widely in China, or holding CE documentation for Europe, is not automatically compliant for import into Israel. Requirements depend on the product, its intended use and its classification.
Assess this before ordering. Discovering a testing requirement while the container is at the port is the most expensive time to discover it.
Practical points that repeatedly matter
- Chinese New Year shuts factories for weeks and congests production either side of it — plan orders around it
- Get carton dimensions and gross weights in writing; they drive your freight cost
- Keep the approved sample sealed and labelled
- Put the specification, packaging standard and inspection criteria in the purchase order
- Confirm the Incoterm explicitly — EXW, FOB and CIF quotations are not comparable
